The Writer’s Almanac for October 15, 2016: Wyoming Highways

Oct. 15, 2016: birthday: Arthur Meier Schlesinger Jr.

It’s the birthday of Arthur Meier Schlesinger Jr., born in Columbus, Ohio (1917) (books by this author). He wrote The Age of Jackson (1945) and A Thousand Days (1965), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize. He read everything he could get his hands on while he was still very young, and pointed out in his autobiography that people were likely to have read most of the books they were going to read by the time they were 25. He wrote: “I welcome the march of sanity and progress. And yet, and yet. … As a historian, I am bound to feel that an era is coming to an end. Did I write ‘as a historian’? Let me confess: as a smoker of cigars.”
